Nepal Earthquake
Nepal has been hit by its worst earthquakes in more than 80 years. 8,500 lives have already been lost, and the death toll is rising by the day. Thousands have been left homeless and the country's hospitals and emergency services are struggling to cope.
How have Learning for Life projects been affected?
Learning for Life has a long history of working in Nepal, particularly in the remote Makwanpur district, which has been hugely affected. Early reports from our partners on the ground have confirmed that 12 of the 20 supplementary schools Learning for Life have set up have been completely destroyed. The remaining eight school are in very remote areas and staff are still attempting to reach these schools to assess the damage.
350 people in the Makwanpur District have lost their lives, with many more seriously injured landslides from the earthquake have left the area without electricity, telephone lines and infrastructure, staff are only able to access the area via motorcyle. Many of the families of the children we have been supporting have no shelter and have no option but to sleep in open areas, their homes, mud huts to begin with, were destroyed in the mudslides.
Learning for Life are currently providing emergency relief and supporting 280 families in the Makwanpur district. We are also delivering monthly food packages which consist of rice, lentils, oil and salt which will feed a family of five.
How you can help:
£20 - can provide materials to cover a damaged roof and protect a family from the rains.
£40 - can provide a family of five for food for a whole month
£80 - can provide a family of five with shelter in a structured tent.
In the unlikely event that we raise more money than can reasonably and efficiently spent, the money will be used to provide education for children who are denied or receiving inadequate education in Nepal, Bangladesh and India.
